Cargo Moonship
[88/123]
Title: Cargo Moonship
Catalog Number: SF-041
Original: Digital
Updated: 2006
Caption: Lunar expedition cargo ship designed by Wernher van Braun and the Collier's 1951 Space Travel Symposium team. The ship is one of a fleet of three moonships proposed to be constructed in space. Two of the moonships would be passenger ships that would go to the moon, and return to earth orbit. The cargo ship carries no fuel for the return flight and would remain on the Moon, the space these tanks would have occupied is taken by a single cylindrical cargo "silo" 75 feet tall and 36 feet in diameter. This contains all the necessary equipment, supplies and provisions for the 6-week sojourn on the moon. Most of the ship would be disassembled and used in the construction of a Moon Base. The cargo cylinder itself is designed to be split lengthwise into two Quonset-type buildings.
