Caption: The Juno was a launch platform for the early Pioneer satellites. Pioneer 3 while orbiting the earth discovered the Van Allen radiation belt. Pioneer 4 on March 3, 1959 was the first US probe around the Sun. Four-stage US Army rocket. Height 58 feet. A liquid fuel rocket motor in the first stage generates 150,000 lb of thrust using liquid oxygen and kerosene as Propellant. Three upper stages, made up of clusters of solid-fuel Sergeant rockets provide the boost to reach orbit and beyond. |
