Caption:
UMBRAS Spider ( Solar Powered Ion Driven Eclipsing Rover ) is a a free flying occulter spacecraft that would fly in formation with a space telescope . Its primary function is to block star light from reaching the telescope, thus allowing imaging of faint objects near bright ones, such as planets about stars.

The UMBRAS SPIDER spacecraft will be semi-autonomous, with its own Solar-electric Ion propulsion (XIPS) and power generation (solar cells), communications, and navigation capability.

The spacecraft is designed by Ian J. E. Jordan, Alfred B. Schultz, and Helen M. Hart of the Computer Sciences Corporation. For more information visit the Umbras web sit today.

The 3d image of the Umbras Spider was created using Strata Studio 2.5.3 computer graphic program. The model's parts where made with Illustrator and imported into Strata and skinned. Created by Edward Rowles in 2000 for Space Telescope Science Institute.
